Where IS This Place?

If you are planning a vacation in Washington County you clicked on the right site. Washington County Maine is the last County on the Eastern Seaboard before Canada. It has, with out a doubt, changed the least amount of all the areas along the Eastern Seaboard in the last 50 years. The population of Washington County has changed very little since 1900 and even has lost a few. Population is holding at around 30,000. Some have described it as time travel when making the drive from Ellsworth Maine along Route 1 heading to Canada. A few one room school houses were still in use as little as 20 years ago. There is still a net work of gravel roads in vast woodland areas without any No Trespassing signs. One of my good friends defines a county road as a road where one can feel comfortable stopping along the way and getting out and having a pee without anyone come along to disrupt him. I can remember in the years of my misspent youth in Washington County getting together with some friends in an old car and driving all day long on the vast system of woods roads without crossing a tar road. There are still plenty of those roads around the County. Major sources of employment in Washington are Fishing and Wood Harvesting and in that respect little has changed little in 200 years. Most of development in the last 30 years has been along the coast but there are hundreds of miles of rocky coast line in Washington County and if you know here to go you can still find a beach to yourself for a picnic. I have devoted a large portion of this site to identifying those places like that for you. Places off the beaten path, places the natives frequent and for the most part don’t cost much either. I am also going to tell you where you can find a clam digger to dig you a bucket of clams that day as well as a retailer who processes them daily and give directions to Lobster Pounds that the natives use. Native people in Washington County do not go to Bar Harbor and tourist places like hat. They go to places that are still free and uncrowded, places that suite their independent nature. In many of these places you can build up a good wood fire and steam up some calms and lobsters and oh, yes chug down a few choice beverages. One of the great things that have happened to Washington County is that there have been a number of large land acquisitions including whole islands off the coast. It is possible if you now where to go to take a small boat out into one of the big bays and have an island all to yourself for the day. Many of these can be done on a clam day in an ocean going kayak The native people in Washington County are very polite and respectful for the most part. However, it is a land of characters who if given the opportunity can entertain you with sayings and euphemisms that go back two hundred years. You can still hear the accent of their Irish and English ancestors when they speak. You have not eaten Maine Lobster or eaten a steamer until you have had them from the clean coastal waters of Washington County. There is just some thing about a lobster living on a rock bottom in kelp beds that gives them a flavor not found any where else. Hope you enjoy this site and I would love some feed back as thus is a non profit site and a labor of love for me.
